The Seller sells and transfers to the Buyer, and the Buyer buys, these goods (the "Goods"):

  • Description: Item sold (make, model, year, colour)
  • Serial number, VIN, or registration number: Serial number, VIN, or registration number
  • Included with the Goods: Accessories, keys, and documents included

2. Price and payment

The price is Price (with currency). The Buyer pays the full price on the date of sale by Payment method (e.g. bank transfer).

The Seller confirms receipt of the full price by signing this bill of sale. Ownership passes to the Buyer when the Seller receives the full price in cleared funds.

3. Delivery and risk

The Buyer takes possession of the Goods at Place of delivery on the date of sale. The Seller does not keep possession of the Goods after that date.

Risk of loss or damage passes to the Buyer on delivery. The Buyer pays the cost of collection and transport, unless the parties agree otherwise in writing.

4. Seller's promises about ownership

The Seller promises that:

  • the Seller is the only owner of the Goods and has the right to sell them
  • the Goods are free of any loan, lease, finance agreement, lien, or other claim by another person
  • the Goods are not stolen, and no one has changed or removed their serial number or VIN
  • the description in section 1 is accurate
  • the Seller will sign any document needed to register the transfer in the Buyer's name

If another person proves a better right to the Goods, the Seller refunds the price and the Buyer's reasonable costs.

The Buyer has inspected the Goods, or had the chance to inspect them, before signing. Except for the promises in section 4, the Goods are sold "as is", with no promise about their quality, condition, or fitness for a purpose. This section does not remove any right that the law does not allow the parties to exclude.

6. Vehicles

  • The odometer reading on the date of sale is Odometer reading (or Not a vehicle). To the best of the Seller's knowledge, it shows the actual distance travelled, unless section 5 says otherwise.
  • The Seller gives the Buyer the registration document, all keys, and the service records it has.
  • Each party notifies the vehicle registration authority of the sale, as the local law requires.
  • The Buyer insures the vehicle from delivery and does not use it on public roads until the law allows.

7. Taxes and fees

Tips for a good bill of sale

  1. 1

Copy the serial number, VIN or registration number exactly from the item or its papers.

  2. 2

List every known defect, so the buyer cannot later say they did not know.

  3. 3

Hand the item over on the day of sale, and record the time for a vehicle.

  4. 4

For a vehicle, write down the odometer reading and file the registration transfer quickly.

  5. 5

Check for unpaid loans or finance on the item before you pay.

Questions

Does a bill of sale transfer a vehicle's registration?

No. It records the sale between you. The seller and buyer must still tell the vehicle registration office, for example DVLA in the UK, the RTO in India with Form 29 and Form 30, or the state DMV in the US.

Does a bill of sale need a witness or a notary?

Usually not. In India two witnesses are customary. A few US states ask for a notarized bill of sale for some vehicle sales, so check your state's DMV rules.

Can I change the wording?

Yes. Open the template in SignKaro, fill in the blanks, and change any line yourself or ask the built-in AI to rewrite a clause. Then send it for signature.

Is this template legal advice?

No. It is a plain-language starting point. Laws differ by country and state, so ask a lawyer to review contracts that carry real risk.
